  • My order has been delivered, where do I start?
Lay out on the cable on the ground and check which end the power lead connects to. Assemble and test the festoon on the ground before fixing in final position.
  • Which way round do the holders fix?
The flat cable has two side, one plain and the other with parallel ridges. The holder can be fitted to either side (or both if required). If you are Connecting multiple cables make sure they follow the same side of cable, Otherwise you will have some upside down!
  • How tightly do you have to screw up the lampholder?
Tight enough to make the mechanical & electrical connection! There will not be any thread visible when tightened fully.
  • What distance can the festoon bridge?
We recommend that for spans in excess of 5M the optional wire catenary is used. If there is a connector in a long festoon span, that must also be supported in this way.
  • Can I cut the festoon into shorter lengths?
It is possible however it will need to be done in accordance with the current wiring regulations. If you wish to do this we strongly suggest you consult a professional electrician to ensure your safety.
  • Can I hard wire the mains connection without using the power lead?
Yes, the two conductors are embedded in the rubber cable but can be accessed by removing the live end and carefully stripping the rubber away. Make sure the dead end of the festoon is always terminated with the end cap supplied.
  • A couple of holders don’t work, how do I fix them?
If you’re happy that you’ve tightened the holder sufficiently there are a couple of things to try. With the festoon disconnected gently ease the metal centre contact up a couple of millimetres and similarly ease the side contact out a touch. Replace the lamp and retry. We have had a couple of occasions when that the centre metal lamp contact had some excess epoxy resin on the surface. With a flat tool it should be possible to scrape this off. Should you still not get these working please contact us for further instructions.

  • Can I use traditional tungsten lamps?
Yes but please note traditional BC (B22d) cap lamps were manufactured using generous amounts of solder compared with today’s LEDs. To aid installation smooth the two solder contacts with an abrasive pad or paper to round off the profile of the contacts. This ensures the lamp doesn’t snag in the holder, fits snugly and makes a reliable electrical contact, Failure to do this could result in damaging the Festoon Lampholder.

  • My order has been delivered, where do I start?
If you have ordered a length of festoon cable please fit the dead end, If this has been provided by us it will look like this You will need a heat gun to shrink this on the end of the cable, this will ensure an electrical & weather proof seal. You can now fit the plug on the other end or If you have ordered a roll of cable & are cutting it to custom lengths, please make sure you use appropriate weather proof plugs/joiner boxes/dead ends in accordance to local electrical safety standards. You can now lay out the cable & work out how many lamp holders you want & the distance between them. In our experience it is easier to assemble and test the festoon on the ground before fixing in final position.
  • Which way round do the holders fix?
The holder can be fitted to either side of the cable but double check that they are all facing the same direction! As you tighten the lampholder the metal spikes will pierce the cable making a secure electrical & mechanical connection.
  • Do I need Tools?
Although you do not need tools & can tighten the lampholder by hand it may be of benefit to use tools such as pipe wrenches / slip joint pliers when faced with multiple lampholder installations, to provide leverage and speed up the assembly process.
  • How tightly do you have to screw up the lampholder cap?
The lampholder when fitted correctly will compress the outer sheath of the cable. On the inside of the moulding within the cable channel there are three ‘ribs’ which are designed when under pressure to prevent rainwater from entering. Because the cable thickness is manufactured to a tolerance of +/- 0.5mm it’s not possible to state that the locking threads will or will not be visible when tightened but you should feel when it makes a tight secure electrical & waterproof connection.
  • Do I have to use the weather proof sleeves?
Yes, If you are using this outside please fit the weather proof sleeves provided. This slides over the lampholder & once the lamp is secured it will form a weather proof seal. Please do not use any additional sealants Rather than an aid to waterproofing, chemicals in the sealant attack the fabric of the holder changing the molecular structure from pliable to brittle, leading to lampholder failure.
  • Can I reuse the lampholders?
Yes, the lampholders can be moved & used again but you will need to replace the festoon cable with each installation, as once the lampholder has pierced the cable it will no longer be safe to use (If the lamp holder is moved).
  • What distance can the festoon bridge?
We recommend that for spans in excess of 5M the optional wire catenary is used. If there is a connector in a long festoon span, that must also be supported in this way.
  • How Should a lampholder with weather proof sleeve look like once assembled correctly?
The completed lampholder with weather proof sleeve should look like this once assembled.
